I’ve recently joined the millions of readers who make good use of the ability to pre-order books. Get in My Kindle is a new feature where I will share upcoming books I’ve pre-ordered, am early reviewing, or want to share some anticipatory buzz about. It’s my way of sharing awareness of what’s upcoming that you might enjoy. This first feature is a romantic comedy, but I’ve also pre-ordered a romantic suspense, a memoir, and a non-fiction book about the reading life. I’m so excited about this feature and can’t wait to share more of my picks with you!
I’m no stranger to an Avery Flynn romance. I’ve reviewed her before on this site when she released High Heeled Wonder, a romantic suspense with bodyguard and opposites attract tropes (read my review of High Heeled Wonder here). I’ve read a few more of her books over the years and have meant to read a few more. But when the cover and ARC lottery for Butterface hit my inbox, I knew I had to put this book on my blog, ARC or no.
The inspiration behind the idea for Butterface (which you can read on USA Today’s Happily Ever After blog here) is a mixture of a conversation in college, a character who started screaming at a writer, and a desire to write “a strong heroine who addressed the pretty bias straight-on and who had no intention of getting a makeover to find love because that is some prime-time BS right there.” As soon as I read the description, I knew I had again found one of my tribe in Avery Flynn:
Looks aren’t everything.
It’s true. I’m not what most people would call “pretty” and, well, high school was rough. Fast forward ten years and life is good…
Until a bunch of jerks think it’s hilarious to put the “butterface” (AKA me) on a wedding Kiss Cam with the hottest guy ever—and that old humiliation hits hard.
I recognize him immediately. The hottest cop in Waterbury and totally out of my league.
But then he kisses me.
And we totally forget the room, the crowd, everything.
Then he tells everyone we’ve been dating for months.
Soon everything starts to feel too real, from adorable fights over “necessary” tools to fix my broken porch to surviving a free-for-all dinner with his six siblings to picking up where our last kiss left off.
But there’s something he’s not telling me about why he’s really hanging around, and I’m pretty sure it has to do with my mob-connected brothers.
Because this is not a makeover story, and Cinderella is only a fairy tale…
As a plain jane myself, books with heroine’s who aren’t blonde haired, blue eyed, legs up to their neck models have always gotten my attention (as my Betty Neels obsession will attest to). Though I’m all for a Princess Diaries style makeover that transforms a woman from overlooked to head turning stunner, I can’t resist a book in which the girl snags her guy while still sporting thick thighs or non-descript features, tripping over her feet and/or her tongue, or being hopelessly shy.
Butterface comes out Monday, July 30th. You can pre-order your copy by clicking this link:
